Give me a break, this is a fine image not really a digital manipulation... people think that photography is reality (it has never being). The cleanup in the image below could have been made in a darkroom 60 years ago (will take more work but not a technical challenge). I personally do not like "photographers" that need to do this extreme cropping to get an interesting image (the original image is at best a bad snapshot).

Last Night I went to the pre-view of the new play at the San Jose Rep, The Weir. The tempo of the play goes up and down and it may be one story too long but the actors do make you fill like you where inside a Irish Pub listening to some locals shoot the breeze. Very entertaining.

Here is a description of the plot:
Valerie has moved from the city of Dublin to rural Ireland. Her real estate agent, Finbar, brings her into a pub where a group of lonely souls seek refuge from the bluster of the outside world. By telling stories, they create a haunting and poetic sense of family to break the silence of their isolation. When they discover Valerie has moved into a house considered “haunted,” the tales of the supernatural begin. Small mysteries evolve into eerie astonishments as the ghostly storytelling soars into liberating confessions of love, loss and loneliness. Half-hidden wounds are revealed throughout an evening of drink and ego-driven rivalry for Valerie’s attention, bringing these drinking buddies together in unexpected and deeply felt ways.

A very good 6 issue old Color Photography magazine finaly has a website, http://www.color-mag.com/. The website is minimalistic but it have some articles and a list of all the issues. I will use it to find out when the new issue is out. This week I purchase issue 6 and it is very nice.

Coffee Overdose

Today I am hanging out at the Philz Coffee in Downtown San Jose. I came here for the first time last week and their specialty "drip coffee" (Very similar to Puertorican cafe colao) and found the coffee with cream to be to high in caffeine. Today I try there decaf and it is a lot better (I think it has similar caffeine as regular coffee on a normal coffee shop). Took this picture today and it definitely tells the story... caffeine overdose!

This month in the upstairs gallery at the PCNW.org they have some nice photographs from School Graduates. The one that cough my attention the most is Pink Shoes, 2007 by Ellen Witebsky. I love the used leather of the pink shoe and the shallow depht of field. I could do with out the 3rd shoe, but I like the photograph.

Today I developed my 1st roll of film with my own hands. It was easier than I thought and came out pretty good. I also made my 1st set of Black and White RC prints contact sheets and 8 x 10 enlargements. I think I am hooked.

Tulip Fields

On Friday I finally made it to the Tulip Fields that are 1 1/2 hr from Seattle. It was a great afternoon. The light was great and the field were dry (I was told that they are usually very muddy this time a year). I got inspired and am very happy with the images I was able to capture.

I finally started going trough the images from the trip selecting some that may have potential. I am still in the middle of the editing process but I do get a nice feeling looking at the set of images from Cambridge. I had originally planned to go to Oxford but I end it up staying in near the West End during my second stay in London and the train station near by did not had direct trains to Oxford. There were direct trains to Cambridge so I went to the perennial enemy of Oxford instead. Cambridge turn out to be very charming and jam packed with bicycles and bicycles with baskets. Plus they have a museum with a nice collection of Manet, Cezanne, and Rodin.

This past Saturday I had fun in the Digital Lab at the PCNW helping print a large panorama. The panorama was a stitched of 60 images taken with a SLR XTi on a tripod. It was a beautiful very detailed panorama of the Seattle Water Front. The picture was 3/4 printed at the point a I took this snap with the cell phone.

Cool Mag: Why do you choose to use 7 1/2 x 7 1/2 inch sized prints?

Michael Kenna: It is a fairly intimate size that reflects the way I like others to view my work. Our eyes see about 35 degrees in focus so my prints usually mean viewers stand 10 inches away to view them. That is pretty close. I like that engagement. Larger prints would mean a greater distance. I have made prints pretty much the same size for a long time and like the thought that a print from 30 years ago can happily live with one I make today. One big happy family.

Last week I went to check out the exhibit of old prints. They had a nice selection from a number of masters including Ansel Adams. Out of the prints I picked two as my favorites photographs of the exhibit.

Best Print:
Ruth Bernhard - Nude in a Box

Very sexy. Extraordinary Tonal Range, Complementary curves around the hips, lower back and breast in contrast with the straight lines of the box.

Great lighting achieving nice light drop off in the curves and a well lit face.

The expression on the model face is relax, peaceful.

The tonality on the back ground matches the tonality inside the box which is very pleasing.

Ruth Orkin - American Girl in Italy

Very Dynamic Image. I really like how you can go face to face and your eye stays in the image. Some of the people are aware of the photographer so it feels like photographer is part of the gang of guys looking at the beautiful girl. Also I like the guy that is rearaging his jewels, a old hispanic tick.

Paper Bag Assigment

This weekend I completed the 1st assignment for the "Finding your Vision" photography class. The 1st assignment was to photograph a paper bag. I use a paper bag where a delicious ham biscuit from Stumptown Coffee that I got the night of the class was stored. It is also the same size of paper bag as used for my breakfast bagel with cream cheese or sausage and egg English muffing sandwich that I get from Midtown Espresso. I had to take pictures in at least 3 different ways. Here is what I came up with.

New Site Name

Looking for a name that better fits my efforts to get more into photography and may be make it a profession I am now trying out a new name, MemoriesCurator.com. Hopefully it will have a better fit and easier to use.

As the first post of the re-imagined site here is a nice memory from this past Friday. Last Friday afternoon the sun was out in full force in downtown Seattle which is a extremely rare occurrence this time of the year. I decided to take advantage an take in the last rays of the day at the Oly mpic Sculptur e Park. It was a nice hour between 3 and 4 pm doing some people watching and reading a magazine. Then I had one of those moments that makes you love being a photographer. Looking at the sun setting and the sculpture of Alexander Calder Eagle (1971) I visualize a picture using the sculpture to avoid flare while shooting straight into the sun. After I capture that first picture as visualize (picture at the right) I started to see more possibilities. With people walking by and the boast going by in the Puget Sound I took a series of photos. While taking the photos I had a feeling of acceleration as I was in the right place to make a nice photo series and I was the only photographer taking advantage of the opportunity. A sample of one of the series is below.

Courtney's and David's Wedding

The wedding was fun. Did not get to take the picture of the bride and groom that I wanted with the vintage medium format camera. You can see the images that I took here. The couple was too busy for me to bug them for a picture. After this experience it is clear that if I want to do wedding photography I will have to go and do it as the wedding photographer.

120 and 135 film scanner has arrived

The Canon 120 and 135 negative film scanner was delivered today and I can't way to start using it. I hope that it does a good job specially with the medium format negatives.

Just For Art Workshop 2 Portland

This past Sunday I took a drive to Portland to participate in the Just for Art Workshop put together by Mr. T and Ms. T. The workshop surpassed my expectations! Being in this type of photo shoot is great to get more in tune with the camera equipment (I caught myself making some mistakes that I have to keep an eye on in the future). It was a grate time, well worth the 3 hr drive each way. It was definitely a great group of photographers and models. I capture tons of nice images with my Canon XTi. Shot one roll with the Minox 35 EL and shot a roll and 1/2 with the Agfa Isolette II.

The Mountain was out

Saturday it was a preview of Seattle summer. Took advantage to grab the classic Seattle. Good that I did because the rain was back on Sunday for the week.

Lenses are off

I put some lighter fluid on the threads of the middle lens element and the back lens element hopping that they would loosen up enough to unscrew them with my fingers but no luck. My search for the tool to remove the lens (lens spanner) came up empty as the good ones are more than $200 and the cheap ones are not effective and cost $50 (more than the camera that I am trying to fix). So necessity is the mother of invention. I found my 10 cent lens spanner in the cap of my pen. I pull off the cap metal part and bend it to get it the right size to fit the available space and engage both lens treads indentations. I had to apply a fair amount of force to get the threads unbind but after that I was able to unscrewed with my fingers. From there they went into a bath of 99% alcohol for cleaning. I also was able to remove the not that holds the shutter assembly and was able to clean the shutter blades with a cotton swab (that assembly is a mechanical marvel). Today is reassembly night.

Focusing Lense is Off

After a night soak in lighter fluid and a application of WD-40 the focusing lens thread of the Isolette II came finally loose today using only my fingers and a fabric cloth. This will allow me to clean the lens and to properly set focus. Now I just need to figure out how to undo the other lenses for cleaning and cleaning of the shutter blades. The test roll is now being developed to get an idea of the lens performance and the bellow condition. It turns out that the model I got has the entry level lense (Agnar) and the entry level shutter (Proto).

Isolette II - New toy

On Friday I got my new toy on the mail from e-bay. A 6x6 120 roll film medium format camera that looks like the mom of the two little Minox 35. It has a lens folding mechanism very similar to the Minox 35. The Isolette II made by Agfa in Germany for England (distance scale is in ft) is a fully manual and mechanical camera (no batteries needed). The camera came almost fully operational. The only major issue is a frozen focusing ring (frozen at infinity due to dry grease, a know problem with this camera). I am currently in the first test roll testing the status of the original bellow. I am starting the CLA process by putting the lens assembly in lighter fluid to remove the grease and get the focusing to working condition. I already clean the outside of the lens. Now I have to clean the inside of the lens and the shutter once I get the grease out. I am also looking into buying or making a new bellow in red leather for the camera. I hope that the current below is in ok condition so I can use the camera in an upcoming wedding.

Today was a great day for street photography. The day was sunny and pleasant. It seams that everybody was out and abou t. The Pike place market was shoulder to shoulder giving a lot of opportunity for street photography. In the market I was mainly using the Minox 35 EL with B&W film but also had with me the digital Fujifilm Z1 which al lowed me to get this shot with the 3 x zoom. I bump into this girl while having lunch and later on at pikes market so I had to take her picture. She looked great on that skirt. I like her style. On this photograph I love that the street sign reflects on the hood of the car as a marker of the location.

The Minox 35 EL works nicely

It took Rite Aid people 3 hr to figure out how to develope the ilford XP2 Super ASA 400 B&W C41. But finally they did. The camera works great, I need to learn to us it to get better candid / street photographs (the camera is very quiet).

Here is a sample shot that show the potential boken that can be had with this nice lense (it is underexpose due to a photographer error.)

These two books are very good photography books. The first one is great if you want to learn all the technical aspect of lighting. It is almost written from an engineer perspective. The second one is great for planing photography trips in the Seattle Area.

Yesterday I went to my first artwalk in Seattle (The pioneer square artwalk). I was a great experience getting to see all this new are and an interesting diverse crowd going gallery to gallery. It is definitely a good way of getting inspired to make some art. While walking I came across a very cool coffee house were I took a couple of pictures.

A weekend of street shooting

This past weekend was fun. I spent both Saturday and Sunday doing street photography. On Saturday I went to check out the Photographic Center Northwest gallery and took some pictures around the Seattle University campus and then spent some time taking pictures inside the Central Seattle Public Library. On Sunday I did some more walking around the first hill district and went back to the public library to return some and check out more photography books for inspiration. Every shooting day I get to know my new DSLR better. I will post some pictures later in the week once I process them because now also switch from jpeg to RAW workflow.

The Mountain

The mountain is out this week. Yesterday I learned that in Seattle "The Mountain is Out" means that is a clear day and Mount Rainer is fully visible from the city. Definitely a view to cherish. I was able to go to the waterfront near pikes market to take a look before night fall.

At the Library

Today went for lunch to downtown to Bruno's and had a great Mexican chicken soup. Also stop by the Central Seattle Public Library to pick up some photography books for inspiration. I am planing to go back to the Library Saturday afternoon to take some pictures inside the building.

Today I was the start of the new phase in my photography. I went to my first Flickr Meetup in Seattle to the model train show in the Pacific Science Center. Was lots of fun playing with the new XTi and the 17-55mm IS F/2.8 Lense. The best part was that I got today in the mail the new 50mm F/1.8 Lense. The 50mm F/1.8 lense is very small and light, at F/1.8 has great shallow depth of field and great looking boken.
